 Nesse dia, 1 de fevereiro de 1858, Santa Bernadette Soubirous (14 anos) foi
  com a irmã Toinette (11 anos) e a amiga Jeanne Abadie (12 anos) recolher l
 enha. Chegando junto à gruta de Massabielle, Santa Bernardette descalçou os
  sapatos e tirou as meias para atravessar a água do rio Gave, e de repente 
 ouviu o som de duas rajadas de vento, mas as árvores e arbustos não se mexe
 ram. Levantando os olhos Bernadette viu então uma luz na gruta e uma dama, 
 vestida de branco, com uma faixa-azul presa na cintura e com um rosário em 
 suas mãos em oração. Viu ainda que em cada pé se encontrava uma rosa de our
 o amarelo. Bernadette tentou manter segredo, mas a sua irmã Toinette contou
  à mãe. Três dias depois, Bernadette voltou à gruta com outras duas meninas
 . Desta vez trouxe água benta para jogar na aparição, a fim testá-la e sabe
 r se não "era maligna", porém, nas palavras de Santa Bernardette, quanto &l

  Bernardette. A história das aparições a Bernardette Soubirous começaram a 
 espalhar-se pela região e <span style="background-image: initial; backgroun

 tial;">algumas pessoas importantes, aconselharam a menina e a dizer à &ldqu
 o;dama&rdquo; que se tivesse algo importante a dizer que o colocasse por es
 crito. Ao transmitir o pedido, Nossa Senhora de Lourdes (que Santa Bernarde
 tte ainda não sabia quem era) sorriu e respondeu que não era necessário esc
 rever o que tinha a dizer. Depois disso pediu à menina para ali voltar dura

 ', times; font-size: 12pt;">Santa Bernardette foi proibida pelos pais e pel
 o comissário da polícia Dominique Jacomet de voltar à grutas de Massabielle
